Smart Knee Implant for Knee Replacement Surgery
Northwest Arkansas’ FIRST Smart Knee Implant Procedure for Total Knee Replacement Performed by C. Kris Hanby, MD of Ozark Orthopaedics.
Fayetteville, AR, Monday August 29, 2022 — Ozark Orthopaedics surgeon C. Kris Hanby, MD has officially implanted the world’s first smart knee implant in the state of Arkansas!
The implant, known as the Persona IQ®, is the world’s first and only smart knee implant granted De Novo status by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration for total knee replacement surgery. Persona IQ combines the proven and trusted knee implant, Persona® The Personalized Knee®, with implantable sensor technology that measures range of motion, step count, walking speed, and other gait metrics.
“I’m excited about the new Persona IQ® Smart Knee. We’re the first to do it in Arkansas,” stated C. Kris Hanby, MD a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and joint reconstruction specialist at Ozark Orthopaedics. “Information from the Smart Knee technology is only accessible to the patient and the doctor’s office. There is no GPS or tracking data taken from the patient, just information about the patient’s knee function such as range of motion. We hope this new technology will help our patients stay connected with us and have a clear understanding of the knee.”
The Persona IQ smart knee implant features sensor technology that records and wirelessly transmits a wide range of gait data from the knee implant to a patient’s base station at home. The bdata is then securely delivered to a HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based platform where it can be accessed by the patient and the surgeon.
