Each May, we recognize Arthritis Awareness Month—an opportunity to raise awareness about one of the most common and often misunderstood health conditions in the United States. At Ozark Orthopaedics, we’re dedicated to helping our patients understand their symptoms, explore treatment options, and regain the mobility and quality of life they deserve. This month, we’re focusing on osteoarthritis, the most prevalent form of arthritis.

What Is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones gradually wears down over time. It most commonly affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, spine, and hands, and is often referred to as “wear-and-tear” arthritis. While osteoarthritis can occur at any age, it becomes more common as people get older.

Common Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms of osteoarthritis can vary, but the most common include:

  • Joint pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest
  • Stiffness, especially after periods of inactivity or waking up in the morning
  • Swelling and tenderness in the affected joints
  • Loss of flexibility or reduced range of motion
  • Grinding or clicking sensations during joint movement
  • Bone spurs or bony growths around the affected joints

These symptoms can range from mild to severe, and they often develop gradually over time. Left untreated, osteoarthritis can significantly impact your ability to perform everyday activities.

What Causes Osteoarthritis?

While aging is a major risk factor, several other factors contribute to the development of osteoarthritis:

  • Joint injuries from sports or accidents
  • Repetitive stress on the joint from work or hobbies
  • Obesity, which increases pressure on weight-bearing joints
  • Genetics or family history of arthritis
  • Bone deformities or other joint abnormalities

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

If you’re experiencing persistent joint pain or stiffness, it’s important to talk to an orthopaedic specialist. At Ozark Orthopaedics, we use a combination of physical exams, imaging tests (like X-rays or MRIs), and medical history to accurately diagnose osteoarthritis.

Treatment typically begins with non-surgical options, including:

  • Lifestyle modifications like weight loss and low-impact exercise
  • Physical therapy to strengthen muscles and improve joint function
  • Medications, including anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers
  • Joint injections, such as corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid, to reduce inflammation and pain

If these methods don’t provide adequate relief, surgical options may be considered. For advanced cases, procedures like joint replacement surgery can provide long-term relief and restore mobility.

Let’s Take Action Together

Osteoarthritis may be a part of life for many, but it doesn’t have to control your life. At Ozark Orthopaedics, our team of experienced specialists is here to guide you through your options and help you find the right treatment plan.

This Arthritis Awareness Month, we encourage you to take charge of your joint health. If you’re experiencing symptoms of osteoarthritis, don’t wait—schedule a consultation and take the first step toward relief.

Your spine does a lot for you—it supports your entire body, helps you move, and protects your central nervous system. Yet, many of us don’t give our backs the attention they deserve until pain or discomfort sets in. February is the perfect time to show your spine some love! At Ozark Orthopaedics, we believe that taking care of your back is essential for a healthy, active life. Here are some simple but effective ways to strengthen and protect your spine. Note: Please consult with your doctor before beginning any new exercise routine.

1. Maintain Good Posture

One of the easiest ways to care for your spine is by practicing good posture. Poor posture puts excessive strain on your back, leading to muscle fatigue and misalignment. Whether you’re sitting at a desk or standing for long periods, follow these posture tips:

✅ Sit with Support – Keep your feet flat on the floor, your back straight, and your shoulders relaxed. If needed, use a lumbar support cushion.
✅ Align Your Spine While Standing – Stand with your shoulders back, core engaged, and weight evenly distributed on both feet.
✅ Avoid Slouching – Whether you’re working at a computer or scrolling on your phone, keep your screen at eye level to prevent hunching over.

2. Strengthen Your Core Muscles

Your core muscles—including your abdominals, obliques, and lower back—help stabilize your spine and reduce the risk of injury. Adding core-strengthening exercises to your routine can enhance spinal support and posture. Try these:

Planks – Engage your core while keeping your back straight. Hold for 20-60 seconds.
Bird-Dog Exercise – Extend one arm and the opposite leg while keeping your back neutral. This improves balance and spinal stability.
Bridge Exercise – Lie on your back with your knees bent, then lift your hips to strengthen your lower back and glutes.

3. Stay Active with Low-Impact Exercises

A sedentary lifestyle can lead to stiffness and back pain. Keep your spine in shape with low-impact activities that promote flexibility and circulation.

🚶 Walking – One of the best ways to keep your spine mobile and pain-free.
🏊 Swimming – A great low-impact workout that strengthens back muscles without putting pressure on joints.
🧘 Yoga & Stretching – Improves flexibility, posture, and spinal alignment.

4. Lift with Care

Lifting heavy objects incorrectly is a common cause of back injuries. Protect your spine with proper lifting techniques:

✅ Bend at the Knees, Not the Waist – Squat down to pick up objects instead of bending forward.
✅ Hold the Load Close to Your Body – This reduces strain on your back.
✅ Ask for Help – If something is too heavy, don’t risk injury—get assistance.

5. Sleep Smart

The way you sleep impacts your spine health. Follow these tips for a back-friendly rest:

Use a Supportive Mattress – A medium-firm mattress provides the best support.
Sleep on Your Side or Back – Avoid stomach sleeping, which can strain your spine.
Use a Pillow for Support – Place a pillow under your knees (if sleeping on your back) or between your knees (if sleeping on your side) for better alignment.

6. Don’t Ignore Back Pain

Occasional backaches can happen, but persistent pain shouldn’t be ignored. If you experience:

⚠ Chronic stiffness or discomfort
⚠ Sharp, shooting pain
⚠ Numbness or tingling in the legs
⚠ Pain that worsens with movement

It’s time to see an orthopedic specialist. At Ozark Orthopaedics, we offer expert care to diagnose and treat spine conditions, helping you regain mobility and comfort.
